Rose-Hulman Homework Hotline answers record number of student calls

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Homework Hotline answered 507 calls from Indiana middle and high school students on Oct. 6, 2009 – breaking the previous Oct. 10, 2006, record of 455 calls answered in a single evening. The Homework Hotline, a free math and science tutoring service that helps Indiana students in grades 6-12, answered a total of 5,637 calls during the opening September month.

“We’re thrilled to know that our service is benefiting so many young students,” said Susan Smith, director of the Homework Hotline. “Our service is continuing to grow and we look forward to helping more and more students this school year.”

To accommodate the growing call volume, the Homework Hotline has hired more tutors and now has 130 on staff. At least 42 tutors are available to answer calls and online requests each night. Tutors help students develop problem-solving skills and understand classroom concepts. These tutors are recommended by Rose-Hulman faculty for their technical knowledge and communication skills.

During the 2008-09 academic year, the Hotline answered a record 44,323 calls and conducted 3,217 online tutoring sessions. To track the Hotline’s call volume, visit www.AskRose.org and click on “statistics.”
