Local Realtor inducted into Athletic Hall of Honor
INDIANAPOLIS – The Birdville Independent School District in Haltom City, Texas, recently announced the induction of Robert Cowan to their newly formed Athletic Hall of Honor. He will be honored at the 2nd Annual Hall of Honor Banquet on Dec. 10, 2009, at the Birdville Fine Arts Athletics Complex.
Cowan participated in football and track at Birdville (later Haltom) High School before attending Arlington State College where he participated in football. He later transferred to North Texas State University where he participated in wrestling and gymnastics and graduated with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Physical Education. Upon graduation, Cowan accepted a teaching position and continued to coach football, basketball, track and gymnastics.
His coaching record from 1968 – 1985 boasts a dual meet record of 300 wins and 18 losses, 87 straight wins from 1970 – 1975, 22 State Championships and three National Championships.
In 1970, Cowan was certified as a National Gymnastics judge and officiated numerous state, regional and national competitions in the United States. In 1984, he was certified as an International Brevet judge and subsequently judged numerous global competitions including the 1986 and 1990 Goodwill Games, 1987 Pan American Games Trials, 1989 World Championships, 1991 Pan American Games and many others.
Cowan has won numerous awards including the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association Coach of the Year (1982, 1984); National High School Gymnastics Coaches Association Coach of the Year (1984); Life-time Member Award (1984) and Distinguished Service Award (1977, 1981, 1984) from the Gymnastics Association of Texas and the USA Gymnastics Frank J. Cumiskey Service Award (1981).
Cowan is currently a licensed real estate sales associate with F.C. Tucker Company, specializing in single-family, condominium and residential land sales. He is a life member of the F.C. Tucker Presidents Club, the highest honor bestowed on a Tucker agent for sales achievement. Cowan is a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Westfield and the Westfield Athletic Booster Club and is a volunteer for the March of Dimes and American Heart Association. He is married to Christine Wicker and has three children: Todd, Courtney and Holly.
