Celebrating Earth Day 365 days a year

April 23rd, 2010

By Holly Havener, executive administrator

This week, the world celebrates the 40th Earth Day. Check out just some of the astoundingly earthy things that have happened since that first Earth Day: the Environmental Protection Agency was formed; DDT, PCBs and CFCs (not to mention other abbreviated forms of bad stuff) were banned or phased out; millions of acres of wilderness were protected; plants were added to the endangered species list, but the bald eagle was removed from it (Mother Nature Network)

We at Borshoff got to thinking, what can we add to the list?

  • By reducing what we use, and reusing more, we’ve reduced our office supplies cost by 5% two years running.
  • Along with the other tenants of the Majestic Building, we recycle paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic. We recycle our ink cartridges, too.
  • As much as possible, we donate items that we’re not using, don’t need and can’t easily recycle – such as furniture, cubicle panels, computers and other office equipment.
  • We purchase CFL light bulbs for office accent lighting. And, we take advantage of our office’s natural light.
  • For everyday use, we have reusable glasses, plates and other kitchenware. For special occasions and meetings, we use items made from recycled materials.
  • When we’re able (which is almost always), we distribute items electronically – invoices, proofs, timesheets, etc.
  • When we do need to print documents, we print double-sided.
  • We repurposed old letterhead into notepads.
  • We educate our staff about and encourage green practices, and have joined other community groups doing the same: Central Indiana Commuter Services, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the Indianapolis Chamber’s Green Business Initiative, and others.
  • We’ve helped our clients promote their own green efforts.

As we commit to growing this list every day of the year, we wish the earth a happy 40th Earth Day. In our efforts to keep greening the world, we want to know…what are your earth-friendly tips and activities?
