Working with a Top Doc

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

By Linda Jackson, senior account director

Franciscan St. Francis Health is one of our largest and longest-standing clients, and we couldn’t be happier that its cardiac surgery “rock star,” Marc Gerdisch, M.D., has been named one of Indianapolis Monthly’s Top Docs.

Not only does Dr. Gerdisch, chief of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the St. Francis Heart Center in Indianapolis, receive accolades locally, but he is also recognized among the world’s leading heart valve surgeons.

Dr. Gerdisch was recognized as a “top doc” because he applies his visionary thinking and skills to the development and use of the latest medical devices and technologies. Among his countless honors and accolades, he was the first in the world to use extra-cellular matrix technology to rebuild an internal structure of the heart. Dr. Gerdisch was also first in the nation to perform post-FDA approval surgery using a new device for treating tricuspid valve disease.

Congratulations on this tremendous honor!

What are you thankful for?

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”  – Marcus Tullius Cicero, ancient Roman writer and scholar

It’s that time of year when we reflect on our lives and everything we have to be thankful for.

When I asked the question, “What are you thankful for this holiday season?” to my colleagues, here are some of the responses I received:

Letting our creativity run wild

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

By Emily Collins, account manager

At each staff meeting, we begin with a Creativity Exercise to get our brains going. Our latest exercise challenged us to develop a few sniglets. For those not familiar, a sniglet is any word that doesn’t appear in the dictionary, but should.

For example, intaxication is the euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

We decided to share a few of our favorites, courtesy of the Borshoff staff.

  • Furloffle – a fuzzy, Greek pastry
  • Gasileanto – a flammable shelter
  • Flimbo – to be in floor limbo, as in stuck on an elevator
  • Shaftivity – to be productive while stuck in an elevator
  • Grandrama – when grandparents come over and feed your kids lots of sugar, then leave you to deal with their hyperactive state
  • Shopulate – to calculate your plan for Black Friday

What word(s) would you like to add to the dictionary?

By Keesha Richardson, account manager

PowerPoint slides are frequently incorporated into presentations. When they’re executed well, they can increase your audience’s understanding of your message. But a poorly created PowerPoint presentation can be worse than not using visual aids at all – and can distract the audience from the intended message.

Check out our 10 tips for creating a better PowerPoint, and let us know if you have additional advice for communicating to your audience during a presentation.

I don’t know about you, but I can hardly believe that the holidays are almost here! Amidst the chaos of the holiday shopping season it is so easy to think about what WE want…whether that is a designer handbag, home décor or a new car. (Wait—is that just me?)

But, the holidays always have a way of inspiring a sense of generosity that sometimes overshadows that feeling of want. People seem remarkably enthused to give of their time and money to organizations in need around the holidays.

Be a better leader

By Allison Eckstein, senior account director

Once a year, Lacy Leadership Association offers a course called Leadership Education and Development (LEAD), and this year I had the opportunity to attend. The class meets for six weeks on Fridays and includes other supervisors, managers and business owners who are interested in becoming more effective leaders. LEAD was an amazing experience for many reasons.

The definition of winning

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

By Katherine Coble, APR, senior vice president

I ran track in high school, but I was never very good, and I wasn’t committed enough to keep it up beyond high school. My husband thinks that one of the funniest things I ever said was, in response to the question, “Do you run?”

I answered, “Only if something is chasing me.”

It takes focused commitment and the ability to step out of your comfort zone to become a great runner. And really, that’s what it takes to become great at anything. By great, I don’t just mean the fastest or the one who wins the race. To me, winning is about constantly becoming better and putting so much passion into what you are doing that you can look back on it later and say, “I am proud of that effort.”

Discovering Indianapolis via the Cultural Trail

Monday, October 31st, 2011

By Myra Borshoff Cook, founding principal

After three years of visiting other cities (Denver, Charlotte and Austin), the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Exchange program elected Indianapolis as the city to “visit” this year.  A highlight of the three-day experience was a bike-ride from the White River State Park Visitors’ Center via the Cultural Trail to the Indiana Landmarks building at 12th & Central.

I was fortunate to ride in a group headed by Brian Payne, the inspiration behind the Trail.  We enjoyed the trip, which took us through the IUPUI campus, past the Glick Peace Walk, across the Indiana World War Memorial Plaza, and up Mass Avenue to the 10th Street Bridge which was recently transformed by large-scale murals.

It’s that time of year again…

Friday, October 28th, 2011

By Jennifer Berry, senior vice president/creative director

…Time for our annual gallery show featuring the work of talented artists from the Herron School of Art + Design. We truly look forward to this event … as much as a child looks forward to Christmahanakwanzika! (And just as much care and planning go into making this a great event.)

Each year, we get to meet fresh new artists and collaborate with them on a theme for the show. “Continuous” is our 2011 theme and it was inspired by the transformation our city has encountered over the past couple of decades – a result of the ongoing dedication of people who desire to make Indianapolis a great place to work, live and visit.
