Get to know: Amy Wiser

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Meet our newest account director, Amy Wiser! She brings with her a vast background of experience and is a welcomed addition to the Borshoff team.

1.  Tell us a little bit about your professional background.

Most recently, I spent three years as the director of communications and marketing for a small, local nonprofit – the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership (INHP). Before that, I was with Kiwanis International for about a decade as a writer, editor, publications manager and PR manager. I’ve also “done time” in the Indiana State Police public information office (well, working for them anyway) and at a small graphics shop as a digital photographer. I’ve enjoyed it ALL.

We still need you

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

By Susan Matthews, APR, principal

Will you still need me? Will you still feed me? When I’m sixty-four.

Yes, Myra, we still need you and we’ll feed you a very special cake for your milestone birthday, from the Beatles’ perspective. In fact, look who has joined John, George, Paul and Ringo on the album cover. You’re in great company!

IPL Live Energy Smart campaign

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

By Bryana Schreiber, account manager

Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) partnered with Borshoff to raise awareness of the company’s Live Energy Smart initiative, which includes various programs designed to help IPL’s residential, commercial and industrial customers reduce their energy use, and in turn save money. Our campaign gently poked fun at the extreme and even slightly nutty things people could do to save energy and provided a simple and easy alternative – enrolling in IPL’s Live Energy Smart programs. An integrated campaign featuring radio, TV, print and transit advertisements launched in the summer of 2011.

Top 10 tips for surviving a crisis

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

By Susan Matthews, APR, principal

No one enjoys dealing with a crisis, but they’re a part of life. Sometimes, coming through a crisis means coming out the good guy. Other times, all we can hope for is survival. To survive and even thrive during and after a crisis, clear communication is key.

1.  Expect it. Even well-run businesses and organizations experience crises. There are things in life that you have no control over. If you expect it, you’ll be prepared, and you’ll be a step closer to surviving it.

The zoo, and all that jazz

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

By Yolanda White, account manager

Indianapolis, like most cities across the country, has its share of “cool” community gems. These are the cultural activities that attract visitors, entertain and teach us, make our communities more vibrant places to live and simply give us reasons to have fun.

One such gem was the setting last Thursday evening, as Borshoff staffers and their families met at the Indianapolis Zoo for our annual summer outing.

Beyond strolls through the tiger forest, exploring the bat den, and glimpses of sea lions, polar bears, ostriches and warthogs, some of us came across some toe-tapping, finger-snapping music, part of the zoo’s summertime series, “Animals & All that Jazz.”

Reading our way to a greener world

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

By Holly Havener, executive administrator

As Borshoff’s “green queen,” I share weekly green tips with our staff. Finding new green tips every week can be a challenge, but I have a fun new source from which to pull information.

My mom recently gave me “The Green Book” by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen. It includes many tips that we can all use every day at home and at the office to help green the planet.

The book also includes anecdotes and stories about conservation from a variety of celebrities, including Robert Redford, Jennifer Aniston and Tim McGraw. And, in the interest of full disclosure, the last page of the book is all about the “green-ness” of the book itself – how it was printed, how much paper was consumed and how the production energy was carbon offset.

Babies are us

Friday, June 17th, 2011

By Beth Millett, vice president

For nearly 10 years, I’ve benefited from the Borshoff “Bring Your Baby to Work” program, but not because I was a mother. As someone who loves babies (um, who doesn’t?), it was wonderful when we had a baby coming to work. I was widely known as the person who would come to your office for a quick snuggle, but sometimes that turned into the baby “disappearing” for hours. I took babies on client errands, to lunch with friends (Robyn and Sherry were surprised the first time I showed up with a baby, but they soon wised up) or just sat them in my lap while I researched, wrote or edited.

With my son Evan joining me in the office until mid-August, I’m excited to return the favor. He’s the tenth baby to join a parent at Borshoff in the 11 years of the program. Now that I can see it from the “other side,” I realize what a great program this is for parents.

When he was born, I couldn’t fathom returning to work, but as my maternity leave came to an end, I realized I was ready to go back to work, with him in tow. Today, I can’t fathom dropping him off at daycare, but I imagine that by the time he graduates from BYBTW, I’ll feel that both he and I are ready for the next step. (more…)

There’s a day for everything!

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

By Allison Eckstein, senior account director

The best day of the work week has to be the day the doughnuts show up. Today happens to be National Doughnut Day and, yes, there’s a day for everything. Doughnut Day started in Chicago by the Salvation Army as a tribute to the volunteer women who made and served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. These generous souls, who continued to serve throughout World War II, were referred to as “doughnut lassies.”

If your 2011 hectic and packed schedule precludes you from making your own doughnuts today, go to Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts for special offers. Participating Krispy Kreme locations will offer customers a free doughnut, and Dunkin Donuts will offer a free doughnut with a beverage purchase. (more…)

You don’t have to go to school

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

By Keesha Richardson, account manager

If you ask many journalists what PR people do, they might tell you PR folks write news releases, pitch story ideas and go home promptly at 5 p.m. That’s their assessment in a nutshell. They’re completely oblivious to all of the research, strategic planning and long hours involved. I know this because I used to be a news producer. For 11 years, I crafted the day’s headlines into newscasts that viewers (hopefully) wanted to watch.
