Accessible Communication

Last week, the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities held their annual convention – a gathering of more than 400 advocates and individuals with disabilities around the state focusing on “Celebrating Community.”  For me, the conference was more than the incredible keynotes by Glen Hiemstra, Aaron Bishop and Ceasar MacDowell. It went beyond the engaging workshops focused on building an inclusive, livable community.

I was captivated by the stenographer.

During each presentation, the stenographer diligently captured the spoken words and projected them onto a large screen for anyone to read. This observation took me back to COMM 101 – the transportation of a message between the sender and the receiver.  Throughout the conference, I observed so many different methods of message delivery:

  • Sign language interpreters
  • Braille note-taking
  • Low-vision aids
  • Hearing aids
  • Closed-captioning

March ushers in a hope for change

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

By Jessica Largent, account associate

March arrives each year filled with our hopes for a change in the weather – a signal we’ve moved past the bitter cold that’s surrounded us for months. This desire for a change  is on my mind; however, it’s not the weather change on which my coworkers and I are focused. As soon as the calendar turned to March 1, we began looking for a change in Hoosiers’ attitudes towards people with disabilities.

Since beginning with Borshoff in October 2010, I have been lucky enough to work with the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities and am honored to assist with this year’s Disability Awareness Month. Annually observed in March, Disability Awareness Month is a statewide celebration to increase awareness and promote independence, integration and inclusion of all people with disabilities. This year’s Council-selected theme, “Cultivate Inclusion,” encourages everyone to contribute to not only a beautiful community, but also an inclusive one, by being open to the unique gifts of others. ‘Free Your Mind’ for Disability Awareness Month

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

During March, people with disabilities, families, schools and others will celebrate Disability Awareness Month statewide with community events, school assemblies, classroom curriculum and other activities.

Led by the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, this year’s Disability Awareness Month features the theme “Free Your Mind.” The campaign inspires Hoosiers to embrace the differences of adults and children with disabilities – a group that represents nearly 20 percent of Indiana’s population.

Each year, Borshoff works with the Council to develop a unique theme for Disability Awareness Month and produces campaign materials. This year’s materials feature people of different ages and ethnicities – with and without disabilities – lying on the grass and gazing at the sky with optimism and enthusiasm. The text reminds us that by embracing people’s differences, we open ourselves to a world of new possibilities. When we free our minds and see the potential inside everyone, we’ll expand our horizons – and our circle of friends.
